Why Resilience Requires Renewal

Last week, I was walking the Ladner dike just before sunset.


The air had shifted. Summer was easing into fall. The Fraser River was moving steadily beside me, the tide turning without urgency. Geese gathered in the fields. The light softened.


Nothing in nature was forcing productivity.


The river wasn’t trying to outrun itself. The trees weren’t clinging to their leaves. The seasons weren’t powering through.


And it struck me:

Resilience in nature always includes renewal.


So why do we believe resilience means pushing harder?


The Myth of Powering Through


Somewhere along the way, resilience became tangled up with toughness.


Keep going.

Push through.

Handle it.


We admire the person who never slows down.

But there’s a quiet cost to that story.


When resilience turns into endless endurance, it slowly empties us out and moves us toward burnout.


You can override fatigue for a while. You can quiet the signals. You can put off rest.

But your nervous system keeps score.


Resilience without renewal becomes depletion.

True resilience isn’t about staying activated. It’s about your ability to move between activation and recovery.


That rhythm is what allows us to last.


What the Nervous System Knows


A hard conversation. A crowded calendar. Uncertainty that lingers. Each one stirs something in the body.


The heart beats a little faster. Muscles gather tension. Energy rises to meet what’s needed.


This is the body doing what it knows. It is healthy and adaptive.


Stress itself isn’t the problem.


The problem is incomplete stress cycles.


If activation isn’t followed by something that settles—breath, movement, reflection, rest—the body stays on alert. Over time, that steady hum of readiness wears away at clarity, patience, sleep, and energy.


Resilience requires renewal because your biology demands it.

We move in rhythms, too. Energy rises and falls—through the day, the week, the seasons. But the world often rewards only the push, not the quiet return.


When we ignore rhythm, resilience erodes.


When we honour rhythm, resilience strengthens naturally.


Nature teaches us what productivity forgot.
